Learning to fly involves more than just stick-and-rudder skills—radio communication is one of the most intimidating (yet essential) parts of becoming a confident pilot. At Pitcairn Flight Academy, we know how overwhelming it can be the first time you press the push-to-talk button. That’s why we teach our students not just what to say, but how to say it clearly and confidently.

Whether you're about to take your Discovery Flight or just started your Private Pilot training, this guide will walk you through the basics of aviation radio communication and help you build solid habits from day one.

Why Radio Communication Matters

Communication is one of the core pillars of aviation safety. Clear and accurate transmissions help maintain situational awareness, coordinate traffic in busy airspace, and ensure compliance with air traffic control (ATC) instructions.

Even if you’re flying out of a non-towered airport like Heritage Field (KPTW), knowing how to properly make position reports and monitor traffic is a must.

Know Your Frequencies

Here are the most common types of frequencies you'll encounter as a student pilot:

  • ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) – Weather and runway info

  • Ground Control – Taxi instructions

  • Tower – Takeoff, landing, and traffic pattern coordination

  • CTAF/UNICOM – For non-towered airports, used to announce position and intentions

  • Approach/Departure – Used in Class B/C/D airspace or when flying cross-country

At Pitcairn Flight Academy, our instructors walk you through each type of frequency, explaining when and how to use them appropriately.

Basic Radio Call Format

Whether you're at a towered or non-towered field, the structure of your transmission typically follows this pattern:

Who you’re talking to → Who you are → Where you are → What you want

Example – Towered Airport:
"Pottstown Tower, Cessna 734AG, holding short Runway 10, ready for departure to the west."

Example – Non-Towered (CTAF):
"Heritage Field traffic, Cessna 734AG, departing Runway 10, remaining in the pattern, Heritage Field."

Confidence comes from clarity. You don’t need to sound like a pro right away—just be clear, concise, and respectful on frequency.

Tips for Mastering the Mic

Here are some simple ways to improve your radio communication skills:

  • Listen first – Don’t jump in the moment you switch frequencies. Pause and listen to avoid stepping on other transmissions.

  • Write it down – Jot down what you want to say before keying the mic. This helps reduce filler words and hesitation.

  • Practice with your instructor – At Pitcairn, we simulate radio calls during ground lessons and dual flights.

  • Use a calm tone – Speak slowly and clearly, especially in busy airspace.

  • Learn standard phraseology – Use proper terms from the FAA’s Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM).

Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Over-talking: Keep transmissions short and to the point.

  • Skipping your call sign: ATC needs to know who they’re talking to.

  • Letting nerves take over: Take a deep breath before transmitting. It’s okay to ask ATC to “say again.”

Our instructors emphasize positive correction and confidence-building, so mistakes become learning opportunities—not setbacks.
