Discovery Flight Safety, Weather and Medical Questions (2026)

A discovery flight is flown with an FAA-certified flight instructor who is responsible for the flight from the preflight inspection to the landing. No flight carries zero risk, so we do not promise that. What we do is build the flight around careful habits.

Before you fly, your instructor walks you through a hands-on preflight inspection of the airplane and uses checklists. Your instructor handles the takeoff and landing and hands you the controls only once you reach a safe altitude. If you have questions about our training practices, call or visit us at Heritage Field and ask.
Your instructor is the pilot in command and stays responsible for the flight the whole time. You fly with guidance, and your instructor can step in whenever needed.

That is why a first-timer can take the controls with confidence. Your instructor talks you through each gentle turn, climb and descent, and handles the radio and the landing.
If the weather is not right, we reschedule your flight. Your instructor makes the go or no-go call, and a delay for weather is a safety decision, not a punishment.

Weather can shift quickly, so no school can promise a flight on one exact day. Contact us if the forecast looks doubtful and we will talk through your options and the next available time.
You will hear from our team if conditions are not suitable. Because the decision depends on the weather at flight time, it can be made close to your appointment.

Rescheduling terms are best confirmed when you book, so ask us about rebooking at that point. Flexible dates on your first request make it easier to find a good weather day.
The FAA says a student pilot does not need a student pilot certificate or medical certificate just to take lessons with an instructor. Most airplane students do need a medical certificate before flying solo, which comes later in training.

Eligibility questions about conditions or medications are not ones we can answer for you. For those, the right person is an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), and the FAA's medical certification pages explain the process. If you are unsure how your health affects flying, ask before you invest in training.
Every flight has to work within the airplane's weight and balance limits, and your instructor confirms that before you go. That applies to you, your instructor and any guest in the rear seat.

We do not want you guessing, so contact us with your age and any size questions before you book. We will give you a straight answer for your situation.
Yes. Many first-timers feel nervous, and your instructor sets the pace. You are never rushed, and you decide how much hands-on flying feels right.

If you feel anxious or uncomfortable at any point, tell your instructor so the flight can be adjusted. Nerves usually ease once you are in the seat and the airplane is doing what you asked.
Tell your instructor right away. Speaking up early lets your instructor change what you are doing so you feel better.

We cannot give medical advice on motion sickness, so if it worries you, talk with your doctor first. Calm conditions and a relaxed pace help, and we plan your flight with that in mind.
Yes. Your discovery flight starts on the ground with a preflight walk around the airplane, and your instructor explains what is being checked and why.

If you want to visit first, you are welcome to contact us and talk with our team at Heritage Field. Our discovery flight page has the booking form, and our guide on how to prepare for your first flying lesson covers the day itself. Ready to go?
